Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

-Leonard Cohen ‘Anthem’

One of the things I’ve had the privilege of doing, is singing with a choir that sings Leonard Cohen songs; there are a few of his lyrics that really affect me, and the above is one of them.

It speaks to letting go of what has been lost, and honoring the still glowing embers of our selves. Each of us mourns the lives we used to live, the unentanglement of people from our past, and the abilities that have slipped away. It’s easy to get lost in loss. However,so long as we are breathing, there still is a bell to ring.

There are untaught lessons, people to love, and joys to be uncovered.

While nobody chooses hardship, difficulty in life is what gives us compassion and reveals that which was once thought of as ordinary is actually precious.

We may be cracked, but we still have our song.
